esplanade quatrains

green river lapping against the gray riprap;
yellow leaves carried north in current’s fingers—

on the wire fence, padlocks fastened as tokens:
some with names, some anonymous as water

four geese preen on the pier, four bathe amongst
leaves & driftwood as a boat’s wake undulates

toward bank’s gravel & brambles; gull circles
its reflection—a bicycle bell jangles
