octet for a day made of flowers

blackberry stalks bloom white in a cedar hedge;
with no apparent plan a butterfly darts

into traffic—within wilted rhododendrons
sparrows talk & I can't make it out at all—

that flat gravestone under a pine: another
among the ten thousand things I remember—

ashes ashes where its shadow has fallen—
roses droop overwhelming a chain link fence
