I read out loud to a friend who has vision trouble every Monday, and we talk quite a bit about how reading together is completely different from books on tape/CD or reading to oneself. It's definitely the shared aspect that makes it special. The words go through the voice of the reader and become something two or more people get to experience at the same time. Reading out loud is a bit like the idea of "slow food." Old-fashioned, but worth the effort!

Willow, John gets all the credit for images on this site. I agree, he does an amazing job of selecting and placing images that enhance the text offerings. He's so very good!Professor Bilgerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06814324979749733906noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4821243838031243709.post-38421884986993118472009-10-16T07:47:22.490-07:002009-10-16T07:47:22.490-07:00A couple of Christmases ago, my husband gave me a ...A couple of Christmases ago, my husband gave me a collection of 20 cds of the classics read by well-reputed British Actors. This is a Penguin release, in an orange, zippered case and hearing the stories read really brings them to life.
I do try to read passages of books that I'm reading to my husband and he, likewise will share some of his readings with me. It is such a wonderful way to experience the written word and to share something special between two like-minded individuals. (That sounded a bit stuffy, didn't it?)
How about this: It's a nice thing to share with a good friend.Kat Mortensenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16877694888419628533noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4821243838031243709.post-21841771230858341622009-10-15T18:05:53.413-07:002009-10-15T18:05:53.413-07:00I am shocked to realize how ignorant I am of the a...I am shocked to realize how ignorant I am of the authors that Audrey mentions in her post. Methinks I have some reading to do. Perhaps we should do an online reading group. It is a sad fact of modern life, I think, that there is no pace in most people's reckoning for the amateur. Everything has to be of the highest standard. (Maybe the only exceptions are on the net: bloggers and twitters etc!)Congrats on the post, though. When I have occasionally heard authors read from their own works I have been fascinated by the way they read characters who I am familiar with (through reading the books) but they are even more familiar with.Alan Burnetthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01015127443616786425noreply@blogger.com
