Larkin was obviously writing from a Trad Jazz/moldy fig viewpoint.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15687192784861682991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4821243838031243709.post-84528946270789804542012-02-21T15:06:46.756-08:002012-02-21T15:06:46.756-08:00I thought I didn't know Straight, No Chaser. I've had it for years on one of several unnamed cassette tapes an old friend recorded for me - Monk and Bud Powell, mainly.

I think Larkin's jazz judgements were somewhat stick-in-the-mud. He should have stuck to the day job (and the poetry).Dominic Rivronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02618013365521035400noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4821243838031243709.post-24879276037285937792012-02-20T13:39:17.706-08:002012-02-20T13:39:17.706-08:00Hi Roy: Larkin was just out & out wrong; I mea...Hi Roy: Larkin was just out & out wrong; I mean, I know what he was hearing in a sense, but he completely misunderstood Monk's approach. & yes, Monk is always great to listen to--thanks!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15687192784861682991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4821243838031243709.post-57454950852236144982012-02-20T12:02:15.268-08:002012-02-20T12:02:15.268-08:00Ah! How could anyone listen to Monk play "'Round Midnight" and call him "the elephant on the keyboard"? No ears, man, no ears at all!Royhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01648670975466222140noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4821243838031243709.post-28855539735665799112012-02-20T11:43:06.157-08:002012-02-20T11:43:06.157-08:00Hi Titus: Thanks!
